Open Enrollment Key Dates

The ACA Open Enrollment Period runs annually in the fall. Missing the deadline may mean waiting until next year — or qualifying for a Special Enrollment Period.

Date What It Means
Nov 1, 2026 Open Enrollment begins. You can compare and enroll in plans for 2027 coverage.
Dec 15, 2026 Enroll by this date for coverage starting January 1, 2027.
Jan 15, 2027 Last day of Open Enrollment. Enroll by this date for February 1, 2027 coverage. After this date, a qualifying life event is required.
Note on North Carolina: NC uses HealthCare.gov for Marketplace enrollment but has robust state navigator programs. NC Medicaid expansion took effect December 2023. NC residents may qualify for expanded Medicaid.

Special Enrollment Period (SEP)

Outside of Open Enrollment, a qualifying life event lets you enroll within 60 days of the event.

  • Loss of job-based or other health coverage
  • Marriage, divorce, or legal separation
  • Birth, adoption, or placement of a child
  • Moving to a new ZIP code or county
  • Gaining citizenship or lawful immigration status
  • Release from incarceration
  • Change in household income affecting eligibility
  • Natural disaster declared by FEMA

Frequently Asked Questions

We know health insurance can feel overwhelming. Here are straightforward answers to the questions we hear most often from Southern residents.

What is ACA or Marketplace health insurance?

The Affordable Care Act (ACA) — sometimes called "Obamacare" — created the Health Insurance Marketplace, a government-run platform where individuals and families can shop for private health insurance plans. All Marketplace plans must cover essential health benefits including doctor visits, emergency care, prescription drugs, mental health services, and preventive care.

In all 10 states we cover, residents enroll through HealthCare.gov (the federally facilitated Marketplace). During Open Enrollment, you can compare plans side by side and apply for financial assistance based on your income.

How do I know if I qualify for a subsidy (Premium Tax Credit)?

You may qualify for a Premium Tax Credit (PTC) if your household income is at or above 100% of the Federal Poverty Level (FPL). There is no strict upper income cap — anyone paying more than 8.5% of their income on the benchmark Silver plan may qualify for some subsidy.

For 2026, 100% FPL for a single person is approximately $15,960. For a family of four, it's approximately $33,000. Use our Subsidy Estimator above for a rough estimate, then speak with a licensed agent for a precise quote.

Has my state expanded Medicaid? Does that affect my options?

Medicaid expansion under the ACA is a state-by-state decision. Here's the current status for the states we cover:

Not expanded: Florida, Texas, and Alabama have not expanded Medicaid. Residents earning below 100% FPL in these states may fall into a coverage gap. Mississippi expanded Medicaid in 2023. Louisiana has had Medicaid expansion in effect for several years. If you live in a non-expansion state and earn below 100% FPL, you can still purchase an unsubsidized ACA plan.

Expanded: Alabama, Mississippi, Louisiana, Arkansas, Tennessee, South Carolina, and North Carolina have expanded Medicaid (NC expanded in December 2023). Residents in expanded states with incomes up to 138% FPL may qualify for Medicaid rather than a Marketplace plan.

If you're unsure which program you qualify for, a licensed navigator or enrollment agent can help you determine the best path.

What's the difference between an HMO and a PPO plan?

HMO (Health Maintenance Organization): Requires you to choose a primary care physician (PCP) and get referrals to see specialists. Care must be received within the plan's network, except in emergencies. HMOs typically have lower monthly premiums and lower out-of-pocket costs.

PPO (Preferred Provider Organization): Gives you more flexibility — you can see any doctor or specialist without a referral, and you have coverage both in-network and out-of-network (though out-of-network costs are higher). PPOs generally have higher premiums.

In many Southern markets, especially rural areas, HMO plans may be the primary option available. An agent can help you find what's available in your county.

Can I change my health plan outside of Open Enrollment?

Yes — if you experience a qualifying life event, you become eligible for a Special Enrollment Period (SEP), typically lasting 60 days from the date of the event. Common qualifying events include losing other health coverage (such as job-based insurance), getting married or divorced, having a baby or adopting a child, or moving to a new county or state.

Some low-income individuals may also qualify for Medicaid or CHIP year-round, regardless of Open Enrollment dates.

What documents do I need to enroll in a Marketplace plan?

When applying through HealthCare.gov, you'll generally need:

• Social Security numbers (or immigration document numbers) for all household members applying for coverage
• Employer and income information for everyone in your household (recent pay stubs, W-2s, or tax returns)
• Policy numbers for any current health coverage
• Information about any job-based insurance you or your spouse are eligible for
• Your bank account information (if you want to set up automatic premium payments)

A licensed agent or navigator can walk you through the application process at no cost to you.

Are bilingual or Spanish-language resources available?

Yes. HealthCare.gov offers a fully Spanish-language version of its website at CuidadoDeSalud.gov, and the Marketplace call center (1-800-318-2596) provides assistance in over 150 languages through interpretation services.

Many certified navigators and licensed agents across Florida, Texas, and other Southern states are bilingual and can assist Spanish-speaking applicants directly. Our partner agents are experienced working with Spanish-speaking households throughout the region.

Is there a penalty for not having health insurance?

At the federal level, there is currently no penalty for being uninsured — the individual mandate penalty was reduced to $0 beginning in 2019. However, going without coverage means you're responsible for 100% of any medical costs you incur.

Given the availability of subsidized plans — many individuals qualify for plans with premiums as low as $0–$50/month after tax credits — it's worth exploring whether coverage is more affordable than you might expect.
